Cal Cities’ biggest advocacy event — the City Leaders Summit — is more than an opportunity to make your voice heard at the state Capitol. It is also a chance to get timely legislative updates and find solutions for some of the biggest challenges facing cities.

The summit begins on April 17 with a full day of lobbying, including a member rally and press conference. Cal Cities’ legislative team will kick off the summit with updates on the most important issues to advocate for when meeting with lawmakers. City officials can take a break that evening at a reception with the California State Association of Counties, hosted by Cal Cities Partners.

April 18 starts with keynote speaker Vincent Phipps, a communication and emotional intelligence specialist. Phipps is the author of the interpersonal skills primer “Lead Out Loud” and a certified speaking professional — the highest honor given by the National Speakers Association. Phipps’ presentation philosophy is “If I can get you to laugh, I can get you to listen. If I can get you to listen, I can help you amplify!” His keynote will focus on how city officials can better their communication skills.

Closing out the summit is Tyler Enslin, an entrepreneur known for providing engaging and practical content. Enslin has been a talent management consultant for Johns Hopkins University since 2016, where he teaches workshops that promote employee growth and development. His keynote will help city officials increase their memory skills.

In between legislative meetings, city officials can check out educational sessions on need-to-know topics, such as redistricting, reducing homelessness, artificial intelligence, the cannabis industry, and community engagement.

Attendees can also join Cal Cities in celebrating California Cities Week. The weeklong celebration, April 14-20, recognizes the work cities do to for all Californians. During the summit, there will be opportunities to boost awareness about the value of cities, as well as honor the people who work tirelessly to deliver essential services.
