Cities Create Interactive Maps to Connect Residents with Local Businesses

As Californians navigate physical distancing, cities have come up with ways to support local restaurants and businesses that have remained open, while connecting their communities to food and essential services as they all weather through the COVID-19 pandemic.

The City of Fremont, the City of Redlands, and the City of Santa Monica have each developed interactive maps where residents could find restaurants and coffee shops in their city that offer take-out and delivery options, as well as shops that were still open for business. The maps are often multi-layered with categories like food, medical care, repair shops, and childcare options to make it easier to locate the type of service residents need.

The City of Fullerton asks their residents to specifically support local restaurants during this time and created a dedicated website called Dine Fullerton. The resource includes a list of dining options available, a map, and links to the restaurant’s website with hours of operation, and contact information to make it convenient for residents to access food close to their home.

Many cities are showing how LocalWorks as they create new, innovative ways to respond to the rapidly evolving circumstances due to the pandemic and stay-at-home orders. These interactive maps are an example of how cities are quickly adapting to serve their residents and showing how important local government is to our communities.
