League of California Cities Issues Statement on Gov. Gavin Newsom’s 2019-20 Budget Proposal

The following statement can be attributed to League of California Cities^® Executive Director Carolyn Coleman:

“The League of California Cities applauds Governor Newsom’s proposed investments in his 2019-20 budget that will benefit California cities, including significant funding to address recent disasters, a substantial increase in state funding for affordable and workforce housing and to address the growing homelessness crisis in our state. 

“We also share in the Governor's goal to create pathways so that more housing can be built in California communities to address the supply shortfall. Local officials know firsthand the burden imposed on residents due to the housing affordability crisis.

“While we have concerns about specific proposals that would raid local transportation funds that voters have repeatedly dedicated to local communities, we believe there are other viable ways to accomplish our mutual goal of increased housing. We pledge to work with the Governor and legislators in the coming weeks and months.”

Established in 1898, the League of California Cities is a nonprofit statewide association that advocates for cities with the state and federal governments and provides education and training services to elected and appointed city officials.
