New initiative seeks to improve physical fitness and mental well-being

Sep 13, 2023

The League of California Cities is partnering with the Governor's Advisory Council on Physical Fitness and Mental Well-Being to improve the health of all Californians, especially youth and families.

Established in 2020, the advisory council includes representatives from health and wellness organizations, youth sports programs, education, the entertainment and fitness industry, and other health experts.

Cities can participate in two different ways.

First, the advisory council is hosting free trainings on how to coach children in ways that provide social and emotional support. Each training will last roughly half a day and will be open to local parks and recreation staff, youth sports league coaches, and school sports coaches.

The advisory council is looking for training participants through the end of this year and into 2024, as well as possible venues.

Second, the advisory council will share best practices for implementing physical activity, mindfulness, and breathwork in schools and the wider community. The council is hoping to collect resources, information, and case studies from cities to inform these best practices.
