Cal Cities responds to last-minute deal that removes Jarvis-backed ballot measure

Sacramento — Following the Legislature's passage of ACA 21 and ACA 22, which removed Initiative 25-0006A1, the "Local Taxpayer Protection Act to Save Proposition 13," from the November ballot, League of California Cities Executive Director and CEO Carolyn Coleman issued the following statement:

“Cal Cities does not yet have a position on this new ballot measure, which affects the ability to raise revenues at the local level. 

At a time when cities are already struggling to maintain a high quality of service in a context of high inflation, runaway costs for basic goods and services, cuts in federal funding, and stagnant sales revenue, efforts that limit the ability to raise local revenues only deepen uncertainty for local governments and the communities they serve.

Californians deserve to know with certainty that their cities can deliver police and fire protection, emergency response, safe roads, parks, libraries, homelessness services, and the list goes on. Make no mistake: When cities’ ability to raise revenue is eroded, the need for services doesn’t go away. The ultimate losers are California residents who depend on those services every day."

Established in 1898, the League of California Cities is a nonprofit statewide association that advocates for cities with the state and federal governments and provides education and training services to elected and appointed city officials.
