Gain insight and practical solutions at the Planning Commissioners Academy

By Cal Cities Education Staff

Understanding the state’s ambitious, shifting planning laws can be challenging for planning commissioners of all tenures. Whether you’re a first-time commissioner ready to learn about the fundamentals or a seasoned pro seeking more information on emerging issues, the Planning Commissioners Academy has you covered.

Taking place March 11-13 in Anaheim, the academy provides city officials with information about the basic legal and practical framework that planning commissioners work in and helps foster relationships with fellow planning commissioners. All planning commissioners will bring back practical, applicable knowledge to their cities.

This year's academy will cover a range of topics, such as parking, planning commissioners’ role in housing production, housing laws, and other legislative updates. The academy will also include introductory and advanced sessions on the California Environmental Quality Act. More information is available in the “schedule at a glance” section of the academy webpage.

Registration and hotel information

Registration for the full academy starts at $700 for city officials from any Cal Cities member city. Conference registration includes admission to all educational sessions, the Wednesday reception, Thursday breakfast and lunch, and Friday breakfast. The deadline to register is March 4. Afterward, officials must register on-site if space is available.

The 2026 Planning Commissioners Academy will be held at the Sheraton Park Hotel, located at 1855 S. Harbor Blvd. in Anaheim. The Sheraton is 12 miles from John Wayne/Orange County Airport and 14 miles from Long Beach Airport.

A limited number of hotel rooms are available at a reduced rate for conference attendees. The discounted hotel rate cut-off is Feb. 17. Hotels often sell out prior to the deadline, so reserve early!
