Cal Cities’ biggest advocacy event — the City Leaders Summit — is around the corner. But it’s more than an opportunity to make your voice heard at the state Capitol. It is a chance to get timely legislative updates and find solutions for some of the biggest challenges facing cities.

The summit begins on April 23 with a full day of lobbying, including a member rally and press conference. Cal Cities’ legislative team will kick off the summit with updates on the most pressing advocacy issues, including Proposition 36, homelessness, disaster recovery, and impacts of the federal budget.

Attendees can take a break that evening at a reception with the California State Association of Counties, hosted by Cal Cities Partners. During the summit, city officials can also attend sessions on gang prevention, environmental inequities, disruptive public comments, PFAS, governance, zoning, and more.

Tristan Cleveland, an urban planner and researcher, will welcome city officials on April 24 with a keynote address on how to redesign cities in a way that draws people together and restores trust. Cleveland holds a Ph.D. from Dalhousie University, where he conducted research on how to transform car-oriented communities. Cleveland has worked on sustainable suburban planning for Las Vegas and the UAE. He recently wrote a plan for Park City’s main street, in Utah, in preparation for the 2034 Olympic Games.

Closing out the summit is Lee Silber. After co-founding a chain of action sports retail stores, Silber became an award-winning speaker and best-selling author. He is currently working on his 27th book, “Generation We.” His interactive keynote will help city officials understand what motivates each generation to vote and how to create personalized messages for each age group.

Attendees can also join Cal Cities in celebrating California Cities Week. The weeklong celebration, April 20-26, recognizes the work cities do to enhance the lives of all Californians. During the summit, there will be opportunities to boost awareness about the value of cities, as well as honor the people who work tirelessly to deliver essential services.
