City Attorneys' Department Committee Dedicates Two Days to Updating Preeminent Resource on California Municipal Law

Jan 20, 2020
This year’s committee, appointed by the department president, comprises 14 city attorneys from throughout the state who dedicated their time to review the guide for thousands of proposed changes in 13 chapters containing nearly 1,600 pages.

Since 1993, hundreds of municipal attorneys have met annually to compile and update this “go-to” resource for researching California municipal law.

The publication hit a milestone in 2010 when the University of California’s Continuing Education of the Bar (CEB) assumed publishing of the annual resource and this year marks the 10th anniversary of this partnership.

Each year, with the assistance of many municipal attorney volunteers, the committee recommends revisions designed to reflect changes in statutes and case law which bear on the subjects covered in the handbook, and to cover new subjects and existing subjects in more detail.

The committee meets in January to review all the changes and complete the final copy to ensure timely publishing in August of each year.

The publication reviewed by the committee last week will be available in August 2020.

The California Municipal Law Handbook is one of a number of resources that the League makes available to city attorneys. Please visit the department webpage at www.cacities.org/attorneys for additional resources and publications that may be of assistance when researching municipal law.
