Cities are committed to being a part of the solution to California’s housing crisis. While cities don’t build homes, they are planning and zoning for housing in communities based on community input.

Current legislative efforts in Sacramento, like SB 9 (Atkins), not only threaten the ability of local governments to plan for the type of housing that’s needed in their communities, but also disregard local democracy by ignoring the voices of local leaders and residents.

SB 9 would allow developers to build up to four housing units on a single parcel in residential neighborhoods traditionally zoned for single-family homes. While high-density housing is part of the solution, SB 9 goes about it in the worst way. It is a top-down, one-size-fits-all approach to land use policy that fails to recognize or incorporate local flexibility, decision-making, and community input.

The Legislature is taking final action in the coming weeks, and time is running out. The League of California Cities opposes SB 9, and we need a strong voice of opposition from all cities that affirms local government decision-making and community involvement in the housing planning and approval process.

Join Cal Cities President Cheryl Viegas Walker and Assistant Legislative Director Jason Rhine for a virtual call to action and briefing. Learn what you can do to stop SB 9 and other harmful housing bills. Your voice can make a difference!
