Running for the Legislature? This Cal Cities program can help you succeed once elected

The League of California Cities is accepting applications for the 2025 California Civic Leadership Institute (CCLI) Virtual Session through March 31. Now celebrating its 20th anniversary, the program helps city officials and other local government officials succeed if elected to the state Legislature.  

The year-long program gives legislative candidates a broad, in-depth understanding of critical issues affecting the state and creates lasting bonds between rising political leaders. The CCLI includes educational opportunities, a policy field trip, and other networking opportunities.

This year, CCLI is introducing a new off-cycle virtual program to broaden participation and accessibility to more local leaders considering higher office.

CCLI graduates also become part of an exclusive alumni network and are recognized at Cal Cities events. Twenty-five current members of the California Legislature, three California Constitutional Officers, two members of the U.S. House of Representatives, and U.S. Senator Alex Padilla are CCLI graduates. 

Any mayor, council member, or city staff member actively running or exploring a run for the state Senate or state Assembly may apply to the program. Elected officials serving counties, special districts, school boards, or tribal governments may also apply.

Space is limited. Applications must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on March 31. Confirmations will be sent to the selected applicants by the end of April.
