An update on our efforts to support local wildfire response recovery efforts

A message from League of California Cities Executive Director and CEO Carolyn Coleman

Good afternoon, city officials, 

Our hearts continue to go out to those impacted by the horrible wildfires in the Los Angeles region. As I send this update, fires are still burning, and powerful Santa Ana winds are creating emergency conditions throughout Southern California. 

I am so grateful for the more than 15,000 personnel, including firefighters from near and far, National Guard service members, highway patrol officers, transportation teams, and city staff who are on the ground protecting and serving our communities.

The federal and state governments are strong partners in the ongoing firefighting efforts. President Biden approved the state’s request for a major disaster declaration, which unlocks federal resources and funding. And this week, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a proclamation expanding the special session of the Legislature to allocate funding to boost response and recovery efforts.

Cal Cities is coordinating with our City Managers Department, Cal OES, FEMA, and other officials to share accurate and timely information with city officials. Today’s Cal Cities Advocate features a list of the most helpful wildfire resources and related legislative developments.

The road to recovery will be long for our Southern California communities. Cal Cities is committed to supporting these recovery efforts and representing city voices in the important policy and budget decisions to come.
