Level up your skills and gain professional education credits at the Annual Conference and Expo

From meeting state requirements on ethics laws and principles to earning Minimum Continuing Legal Education credits, the League of California Cities Annual Conference and Expo offers more than a dozen ways for city officials to gain professional education credits.

Scheduled for September 22-24 in Sacramento, the conference includes a combination of educational sessions, networking opportunities, and Cal Cities governance activities

Minimum Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) Credits

California attorneys can up to 10 hours of MCLE credits on a variety of pressing issues, including land use and CEQA litigation. Planned with support and leadership from the City Attorneys Department, this year’s topics include:

  • General Municipal Law
  • Labor and Employment
  • Land Use and CEQA
  • Torts and Civil Rights
  • MCLE specialty credit for Elimination of Bias (sub-field credit, 1.5 hours)

Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Credits

Anyone holding a license as a California certified public accountant through the California Board of Accountancy can earn CPEs during the Annual Conference, just like they did at the Municipal Finance Institute. These sessions are planned with support and leadership from the Municipal Finance Officers Department and will be noted in the conference program. Topics include:

  • City Finance Law and Elections Update
  • Economic Outlook with Dr. Peter Rupert
  • Finance Directors: Tips for Working with Your City Clerk and Attorney

  • Update from the California State Controller's Office
  • What Finance Professionals Need to Know about IT and Security

State Mandated Training

Cal Cities also offers training that meets state requirements on ethics laws and principles, workplace harassment, discrimination, and retaliation. Certification trainings include:

  • Understanding Public Service Ethics Laws and Principles (AB 1234 Training)
  • Sexual Harassment Prevention Training for City Officials (AB 1661/1825 training)

Other Annual Conference and Expo Events

Attendees can attend all credit-earning sessions, regardless of their professional occupation. However, there’s more to the Annual Conference than continuing education! Full conference registration also includes admission to the Expo floor, breakout sessions, Wednesday’s host city reception, Thursday’s grab-and-go breakfast, lunch with exhibitors on Thursday, the Friday closing luncheon, admission to CitiPAC, and diversity caucus receptions! Plus, attendees get electronic access to all program materials.

Conference registration is required to attend all conference activities including department meetings, division meetings, and the General Assembly. Sharing of registration is prohibited. Please note, online registration closes Wednesday, September 15. Anyone wishing to attend the conference after that date must register online.
