League of California Cities Responds to George Floyd’s Death and Ensuing Protests

Sacramento – Following the death of George Floyd and the demonstrations throughout the state and across the country, League of California Cities Executive Director Carolyn Coleman issued the following statement:

“The League of California Cities is saddened and angered by the senseless death of George Floyd. We offer our deepest sympathies to his family, the community of Minneapolis, and communities in California and across the country who are grieving. 

“Californians have, as have all Americans, been touched by this killing that threatens the collective progress we’ve made in fostering trust between law enforcement and the diverse communities they serve. It is our hope that the justice system will honor Mr. Floyd’s life by holding accountable those responsible for his death.

“Over the last few days, we have witnessed local leaders, police officers, citizen protesters, and others coming together to stand for the common causes of equity and justice in California and our nation. We stand united in support of their voices. 

“I am grateful to the local leaders, including law enforcement, who are keeping their residents and communities safe during these painful and difficult times. There is no place for those who are exploiting the circumstances with looting and violence. 

“Let us harness the unity of the moment to rebuild trust lost and work together for a better tomorrow for all Californians, regardless of the color of their skin. Mr. Floyd deserves nothing less.”

Established in 1898, the League of California Cities is a nonprofit statewide association that advocates for cities with the state and federal governments and provides education and training services to elected and appointed city officials.
