League of California Cities Responds to “Public Safety Power Shutoffs” Leaving Thousands of Californians with No Power

Sacramento – The League of California Cities issued the following statement in response to the power shutdowns currently underway or planned by Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E) and Southern California Edison (SCE). The following statement can be attributed to Carolyn Coleman, executive director of the League of California Cities.

“While we understand the reasons outlined by PG&E and SCE for carrying out the power shutoffs, we also recognize the hardship and distress these shutdowns are causing California families and are concerned about the impact on communities.”

“The League is working closely with the Governor’s office and the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) to ensure the most up-to-date information on community resource centers and safety guidelines are reaching cities and residents impacted by the shutdowns.”

“The League urges city leaders to follow instructions provided by the utility companies and we implore those companies to find a way to keep residents safe with as little disruption as possible to essential services.”

Established in 1898, the League of California Cities is a nonprofit statewide association that advocates for cities with the state and federal governments and provides education and training services to elected and appointed city officials.
