Sacramento – The League of California Cities today commended the state legislature for passing SB 5 (Beall, McGuire, Portantino). The bill passed the Assembly Floor yesterday and was approved by the Senate on concurrence. SB 5 is now on its way to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk where he will either sign or veto the bill. SB 5 establishes a state partnership with cities and counties to provide an ongoing, sustainable and accountable source of funding that will help build affordable housing to address the housing shortage and homeless crisis.
“SB 5 is the one bill in the legislature this year that will result in affordable housing being built right away,” said Carolyn Coleman, executive director of the League of California Cities. “It will provide communities with needed funding to build homes for those most in need.”
Continued Coleman: “SB 5 helps accomplish the Governor’s goal of building more housing, especially for low- and very low-income Californians and we urge him to sign the bill. The partnership between the state and local governments created by SB 5 will make a real difference in this housing crisis.
“We also want to thank Senator Beall and his tireless advocacy on behalf of this bill.”
