Cal Cities highlights top bills affecting cities this legislative session

The Cal Cities legislative team briefed more than 280 city leaders March 18 on the most important bills affecting cities this year.
The pandemic has presented many changes to the legislative process, but it certainly did not impact the amount bills that were introduced. Many measures stalled due to a compressed legislative timeline in 2020, and as a result legislators are eager to pass thousands of pandemic-related and non-pandemic-related bills. In total, 2,572 bills were introduced before the bill introduction deadline Feb. 19. Cal Cities is monitoring 1,885 of those bills.
Last week’s webinar featured a snapshot of the bills that could most impact cities. A recording of the webinar can be found on the Cal Cities YouTube channel.
In addition to the bills highlighted in the webinar, Cal Cities has already issued action alerts on two high priority bills, SB 9 (Atkins) and SB 278 (Leyva).
As the legislative session progresses, updated and new action alerts can be found in the Cal Cities’ Action Center. It is critical that the Legislature hears from California cities about how bills will affect communities, and we urge all cities to submit position letters on these important measures.
