Cal Cities Applauds House Passage of American Rescue Plan with Direct and Flexible Relief for Cities

Sacramento ― Today, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to pass the American Rescue Plan, which includes $65 billion in direct and flexible relief for every city in the United States. League of California Cities Executive Director and CEO Carolyn Coleman issued the following statement immediately following the vote:

“We applaud today’s vote by the U.S. House of Representatives passing the American Rescue Plan that includes $65 billion in much needed direct and flexible relief for cities who have been hit hard by the pandemic. This funding is a lifeline for cities that have been on the front lines for nearly a year, spending billions to protect public health, deliver essential services, protect vulnerable populations, and help small businesses survive, while experiencing billions of dollars in revenue shortfalls due to the shutdown of our local economies. 

“After being told for almost a year to wait for help, with the House’s action today, California’s cities are one step closer to getting resources they need to continue responding to the pandemic and help jump start the rebuilding and recovery of our local economies. 

“We all know the devastating toll the pandemic has taken on families, small businesses, and communities. A strong national economic recovery from COVID-19 depends on relief from the federal government that matches the scale of this crisis. The American Rescue Plan does that, and puts cities on the right path to be able to recover and build bridges to a brighter future. 

“Now that Congress has done its work on the American Rescue Plan, we urge the President’s swift approval.”
