Cal Cities weekly COVID-19 update: Feb. 25- Mar. 3

Over the last four weeks, Cal Cities has issued five action alerts to member cities requesting that they send in city letters, place phone calls, and use social media channels to directly reach congressional representatives to urge support for the American Rescue Plan Act, which includes $65 billion in direct and flexible funding for cities.
Cal Cities also hosted a federal briefing call for more than 400 city officials, which featured an update from the National League of Cities on the funding breakdown for cities and the estimated timeline for congressional activity. The American Rescue Plan is now in the U.S. Senate with an expected Senate Floor vote this week. Cal Cities will continue its advocacy efforts to ensure the proposal passes out of the U.S. Senate and moves on to President Biden for his signature. On the heels of announcing a $6.6 billion school reopening agreement with the Legislature, Governor Gavin Newsom today announced that the Biden-Harris Administration has approved California’s request to utilize Medicaid (Medi-Cal in California) funding to provide voluntary COVID-19 testing for low-income students covered by the program, further supporting schools in underserved communities to reopen for in-person instruction.
