Paramount partners with a local school district to provide 24/7 academic assistance during pandemic

Jan 20, 2021

The pandemic has prompted varying levels of school shutdowns throughout the state and across the country, leaving parents, students, and teachers concerned about the loss of learning. With the majority of California students doing distance learning, educators, parents, and city leaders have developed creative ways to ensure that no student is left behind.

The City of Paramount took a proactive approach to support the efforts of local parents and teachers who are working diligently to provide high-quality education through distance learning. The city partnered with Paramount Unified School District (PUSD) to provide students with free, live virtual tutoring through the Paper Learning “My Tutor” program. This partnership helps minimize learning loss and enhance the remote learning experience for students during this difficult time.

“The School District has reacted to this ever-changing landscape swiftly and efficiently,” said Mayor Peggy Lemons. “Connecting with PAPER Learning for these extensive tutoring services is another sign of how PUSD is offering what our students need to meet the current challenges. As part of the profound value we place on education, and in light of our long partnership with the District, the city decided to support to this program without hesitation.”

The city contributed $125,000 from federal CARES Act funds and an After School Education and Safety state grant to pay for nearly half of the total cost of My Tutor, which covers all subject areas for students in grade levels 4-12, in both English and Spanish. Since students work on schoolwork at different times throughout the day, My Tutor offers assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The PUSD My Tutor program kicked off on Oct, 5, 2020, and since then has offered educational support to about 3,500 students, and more than 7,500 tutoring sessions have been held.

“As everyone knows, distance learning brings several challenges for our students, families, teachers, and staff. Our partnership is a unique opportunity to provide our students with the very best resource available to support their studies while at home,” said Paramount Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Ruth Perez. “The feedback we receive from parents often indicates that their students need more personalized support that is available anytime. Paper meets this need perfectly.”

When asked about her experience working with her tutor one PUSD student shared, “I think she was awesome. She helped me understand a question I was stuck on for hours. I got it done thanks to her! She did an amazing job helping me out!”
