San Diego Converts Convention Center into Homeless Shelter in Response to COVID-19

Throughout the month of March, the global health pandemic of COVID-19 has completely altered Californians’ way of life, and has created unprecedented challenges for cities. City leaders are stepping up with solutions for the many of these challenges including protecting those that are experiencing homelessness in their communities during the pandemic. In order to support physical distancing the events scheduled at the San Diego convetion center have been put on hold, leaving the space empty and available for use. The city converted the convention center into a shelter for the homeless population in the county to reduce the chance of the virus spread . 

“The San Diego Convention Center is a centerpiece of San Diego’s economy, and during this pandemic, it will be a centerpiece in our fight against the coronavirus,” Mayor Kevin Faulconer said at a press conference.
